What are you good at?
Everything crafty! Joking aside, I’m not bad at sewing, I’m a complete beginner at spinning, I’m a keen but mediocre artist, I’m halfway decent at graphic design, and I am passable at a number of crafts I’ve picked up along the way, but I AM good at crochet. (Please feel free to disagree in the comments) I’m not the fastest crocheter, but, and I hope my blog posts support this opinion, 90% of the time my finished projects are of a decent quality. (Just ignore my complete inability to install eyes in my upcoming blog!)

After my hobbycraft crash course 2 hour introductory crochet lesson, back in 2014, the world was my oyster. Crochet made sense to me in a way knitting never did. Patterns scared me, so experimental free form crochet was my go to. If I wanted to make patterns they had to be in video format and reletivly simple.

There was a brief Etsy shop in 2015 filled with my crochet squidoo’s and other keyring objects and dice bags. They started simple, but by the end of it I had Squidoo dice bags and Cuthulu dice bags, the pattern was in my head and recreating them was easy enough. Even back then, the quality must have been half way decent because people did buy various things from my shop!
Shameless plug time, my Cuthulu dice bag pattern is now available in my Ribblr store! or a free lite version is also available on my blog here! The octopus dicebag will also be avalible soon, with a whole new level of dicebag being avalible towards the end of the year.

Returning to my story, the turning point when I really started to ‘get good’ was about and two and a half years ago when I followed my first pattern. It was a fox rattle and snuggly for a friend’s baby. I mean, could have started with something a little easier, but why do things in halves especially when life isn’t the greatest. Honestly, still proud with how these turned out. Thinking about it, a review of this pattern would be a good idea at some point.

After conquering my first complicated pattern, it felt like anything was possible! As you can see from my blog, I’ve tried and made a whole range of patterns, I’ve made a blanket which covers a double bed, and in late 2023 I made my first wearable item of clothing, a large oversized cardigan using Aron weight yarn. Honestly it’s so comfortable I started on a second one right away! (Not finished it yet though! WIP!)
Mid 2023 brought the first Cumbrian wool gathering and the start of my blog. 2024 was the year I published my first free crochet pattern. While my pattern writing skills are in their infancy, the pattern seems to have gone down well and the feedback is good. And in 2025 I published my first paid for pattern.

So all in all, and not to blow my trumpet too much, I’m good at crochet! Though that’s not to say I don’t have way more to learn and improve my skills further!
