Finished Pattern – Snakey Snake

This week’s finished pattern is the free Snakey Snake by Chronic Creator. This was made for a friend because, well I wanted too and I could.

Another great pattern, super easy and really good for beginners. (Honestly, you would think at this point I’m just being nice to everyone, but the truth is, if I don’t like a pattern, I don’t tend to finish the project so it doesn’t get a blog posts post. May change that at some point!) As long as you know how to do a magic ring it’s just a case of increasing then decreasing and doing row after row until you are done. The trickiest it gets is when the snake starts to get long, figuring out how to crochet the small rounds while the rest of it gets in the way. Also, make sure you stuff it as you go!

For the type of stuffing, take a lesson from my mistakes and don’t start stuffing it with regular polyester fibre, then change your mind, de-stuff it, try filling it with weighted beads in a makeshift fabric tube, make it longer, change your mind again, take out the weighted beads and then have to re-stuff an even longer section with the polyester fibre! Just stick to polyester fibre stuffing to start with, make your life easier and the time to completion shorter!

The reason for the change in mind was once the head was stuffed the idea of having a bean bag body was really appealing, but because of the way you construct the snake trying to keep all the little beads in the open fabric tube while crocheting each round is not the easiest. The alternative would be to fill the fabric tube, close it up and then crochet around it, but that would have been more fiddly than I was prepared to undertake, not to mention I didn’t know how long the snake would be, so didn’t know how long to make the tube. In the end it was just an over complication of the pattern for no reason. (sometimes it’s good to suppress those tendencies!)

For the snake I used a variegated chunky wool and absolutely love the way it naturally created a cool pattern down the plushy. Had I used a natural colour, it could have looked quite realistic! But the bright blues, greens and purples make for a very cool looking snake.

Finally once it was finished and the end tied in, it felt like there was something missing. So I added a little red tongue, so it could hiss properly and taste the air.

It’sssssss nice to ssssssssssee you!

All in all, really happy with how this worked out and it’s one of those projects you can finish pretty quickly depending how fast you crochet. This took several evenings to complete, but I wasn’t working very quickly or crocheting for very long at a time (because the repetitiveness of the rounds started to get to me a bit) but it could easily have been completed in a weekend.

If you or someone you know like snakes, would highly recommend getting and making the Snakey Snake by Chronic Creator!
