Pattern – Cthulhu’s Coil: The Eldritch Dice Keeper

Cthulhu dice bag spilling out dice

Picture it: A bag adorned with tentacles, ready to safeguard your precious dice collection. Whether you’re rolling for sanity or summoning ancient powers, this bag has you covered. Plus, it doubles as a conversation starter at your next tabletop adventure.

This intermediate-level project is perfect for an afternoon, only taking a few hours to create (your mileage will vary depending on how quickly you crochet). It uses simple stitches to keep things fun and approachable, while also offering a creative challenge with advanced techniques to form intricate details like the mouth and rim tentacles. These will push you slightly outside your comfort zone but still remain achievable.

Plus, you can easily customise the bag to meet your needs. If you are a dice hoarder like me, follow the instructions to modify the number of stitches or rows, change the rim or add and subtract the number of tentacles he has and you’ll have a bag that’s uniquely yours and fits all your dice! Make it bigger to justify buying more for your collection! (Remember, you can never have too many dice… just like you can never have too much yarn!) And don’t forget, when you’re crocheting Cthulhu, sanity checks are optional!

While the spooky season is a ways off, it’s never too early for some eldritch horror, especially when it’s connected with Table Top RPG (TTRPG) or your dice collection! So figured we’d start big with the old one himself, Cthulhu!

I have a rule, no boring bags (especially where my handbags are concerned) Dicebags are no different. During my breif Etsy selling career many moons ago in 2015, this was one of the two ‘fancy’ dice bags I had for sale. Fast forward 10 years to 2025 it’s time to sell the pattern and hopfully see others amking their own Cuthulu Dicebags.

I’ve included the basic pattern below, however if you enjoy making it, please consider supporting me by purchasing a more advanced copy from my Ribblr store!

The paid for copy includes:

  • Instructions / Pattern to make the bag wider or taller
  • Instructions to add or subtract mouth tentacles
  • 3 bag rim options

This free copy includes:

  • Instructions / Pattern to make a small dice bag

I’ve mentioned Ribblr in previous posts occationally talking about it’s positives and negatives, what works and what doesn’t work for me, but when it comes to sharing and selling patterns, it’s currently my preference as it offers a range of benefits to me as a seller and you as a maker. For me, the pattern is protected as it’s not in pdf form. For you as a crafter, you get an interactive platform with built in tools (progress tracking, auto conversion, example stitch videos.)

To make this bag, you will need:

materials needed (yarn, Eyes, crochet hook and needles)
  • DK weight yarn in your preffered colour.
This bag was made using Wendy Supreme DK in Aloe. You will need less than 100g unless you plan to make the bag bigger. (buy it on Amazon)

My preferred hooks are the Pony Easy Grip hooks. (buy it on Amazon)
  • 2 x 7mm saftey eyes. (buy the eyes used on Amazon)
