Beginner may have some trouble with a magic circle if they have not worked one before. I would reccomend checking out the pattern on Ribblr where they have video tutorials for this and any other stitches you are unsure about.

Measurements

Just like in the books, this golden snitch fits into the palm of your hand when made with DK wool and a 3mm crochet hook.

Larger snitches can be created by using heavier yarn such as Arron or chunky weights and larger crochet hooks. Smaller snitches can be made by using lighter yarns such as sock or lace weight with the corresponding crochet hook.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • FO = fasten off
  • MR = Magic Ring
  • dc = double crochet
  • dec = decrease
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • htr = half treble crochet
  • inc = increase
  • sc = single crochet
  • st = stitch
  • tr = treble crochet

Materials

  • Small amount of polyfil or other type of stuffing to stuff the ball section with. To give a little weight, try using plastic weighted pellets for toys.
  • White DK yarn for the wings – Scrap lengths will work for this (DK)
  • Yellow or Gold DK yarn for the ball – Small scrap lengths can be used for this. (DK)
  • 3-4mm crochet hook
  • A yarn needle to weave in ends, close the ball and sew the wings to the body
  • Stitch markers to mark the rounds

For the ball/body

Make 1, using the yellow/gold yarn.
Worked in the round.

Mark the beginning of each round with the stitch marker. The whole ball is worked in single Crochet (sc)

1- Magic circle worked with six single crochet (sc) (total of 6 stitches (st))
2 – Inc x 6 (12st)
3 – Sc, inc x 6 (18st)
4 – Sc, Inc, sc x 6 (24st)
5 – Sc 24 (24st)
6 – Sc 24 (24st)
7 – Sc, dec, sc x 6 (18st)
8 – Sc, dec x 6 (12st)
9 – Dec x 6 (6st)
10 – Stuff firmly with the stuffing
11 – Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.
12 – Using the tapestry needle, catch all six remaining stitches and pull tight to close the ball. Run the tail through the 6 stitches again to secure and weave in the end.

For the wings

Make 2 – Using the white yarn.
Worked in the round. Mark the beginning of each round with the stitch marker.

1 – Magic circle worked with six single crochet (sc) (total of 6 stitches (st))
2 – Inc x 6 (12st)
3 – In the first stitch of the round – Sc, in the same stitch hdc
4 – In the second stitch of the round – dc, htr
5 – In the third stitch of the round – tr
6 – Fasten off weave in the tails

Assembly

To assemble the golden snitch:

1 – Sew the two wings either side of the ball along the Edge of the circle opposite to the feather of the wing. Make sure the the right side is facing away from the ball.
