Finished Pattern – The Crochet Emotional Support Chicken

Cluck cluck

It’s doing the rounds on Fiber tube at the moment, the knitted emotional support chicken from The Knitting Tree LA .

This is a paid for pattern and looked amazing with everyone seeming to love them. a friend’s birthday was coming up and When you don’t know what to get someone, you make them an emotional support chicken…. Right… right? Well I did!

Happily, while I can do basic knitting, I’ve never got on with it that well and the knitting tree does offer a crochet version. So on a limited timeframe, with many videos on YouTube telling me they managed it in a weekend, bought the materials needed and got started.

Can you guess what it is yet?

The pattern is fairly simple to follow, and I was making good headway with it to start with. the texture of the yarn I had picked was causing some issues and creating a very firm fabric but with an amazing fuzzy aura.

And then we got to the head…

Progress was made until we got to the head. Sadly the pattern at this point is not the clearest and there seems to be a bit of an error with the number of stitches at one point. Three attempts and as many hours later I’ve got something which works.

Thing is, I’ve attempted worse written patterns, one line in a big project like this is not bad, but as I’m watching my time ticking away and the yarn was not made for frogging it proved to be frustrating at the time.

All that was left was to add eyes, sew it all together and stuff it. With the idea that it’s big and cuddly, I purchased a bag of weighted beads and added these towards the bottom.

Quick note, this used an entire bag of polyfil from hobbycraft, should anyone be wondering how much they need, and don’t be afraid to overstuff it! I probably could have added more.

And tadaaaaaaa….

Whatcha looking at chuck?

With no time left it was done! Ready to be wrapped. Incidentally it’s quite tricky to wrap because of its very odd shape.

Overall, I really enjoyed making this pattern and would absolutely make it again for other friends. The weighted beads gave it a nice feel when you were holding it and knowing the pattern better I would imagine it would work up quicker a second time.

If you are in the market for an emotional support chicken, I would highly recommend this one!
