Prompted Musings – Audio and crafting, helpful and a hinderance?

What do you listen to while you work?

90% of crafters will listen or watch something while they work. I’m no different, for me there’s a sense of my hands are occupied, let’s get my brain going now.

Depending on the craft depends on what gets listened too. For example:

– Crochet, if it’s an improvised pattern anything goes, from podcasts to YouTube, to Twitch. Following a more complex pattern where I have to count, (counting is hard by the way!) then music is probably best.

Spotify, Youtube, Twitch

‘Some assembly required’

– Spinning, again, anything goes, podcasts and long form media works best, you are static, the action is repetitive, you can get lost in a good video, stream or movie with little hassle.

Youtube, Netflix, Twitch

‘You spin me right round baby right round.’

– Raw fleece processing, while this is new, you have that much going on and you are moving about so much, podcasts or audio books are the best. Where your eyes have to be vigilant, you don’t need video to distract! That way lies trouble! Especially when learning!

Spotify, YouTube

– Sewing, this is where the audio books come in. You’re moving about, you’re cutting things and seeing things and measuring up. Audio books are the best, engage your ears in a story and let the rest of you get on with the work! Many a project has been completed listening to yet another Harry Potter marathon!

Audible, Spotify, Amazon

No need to tell you when these were made…

It’s interesting to take the time to list the various music and media which is consumed during a project. Most of the time you don’t stop to think about what that is or what form of media is picked for the job. I just know I can’t let my brain sit there and not be occupied.
