Spinning a Tale – EEW Nano 2

It’s here! the EEW Nano 2 is here! Built by the amazing Maurice at Dreaming Robots. It’s tiny, it needed a few tweaks, but it’s here!

Spend long enough watching videos on youtube about crochet and firber arts and I’m sure you will fall down the yarn spinning rabbit hole. Never in a million years, if you told my younger self… even last year that I would own a spinning wheel with the intention of actually using it would I belive you. Why spend time making the yarn when you can buy it from the shops?

Well rabbit holes are fun things when combined with ravenclaw research tendancies. Fun Fact.

So here we are a few months later, with a tiny blue wheel which has the best entry price tag you could ask for in a wheel… I already know if I enjoy it, I’m going back for it’s big brother production wheel, the EEW 6, when I’ve saved up the cash, no questions asked. (remeber responsible spending!)

Becides you need a small one for portability when going away, right?!

And then the fun began…

on the one hand I don’t regret or begrudge getting it from out of the box to capable of spinning. It helps you learn a lot about the wheel, how it works and how it goes together. But its’s still been a journey!

Tweaks

first tweak was to remove the flashing from the orifice reducer, then I couldn’t get it to take up because the bobbin wasn’t spinning freely. Have to say that Maurice creates some brilliant help videos and I followed his nano2 hacks video.

With no heat gun, there was a hope the hairdryer would work. Not a chance. Cue taking the control board and the motor out and dunking it into boiling water. My heart didn’t stop pounding the whole time, but it worked enough! (Lots of big girl pants moments in the last few weeks!)

so then, time to spin some wool! Still no luck, brake band tension? Cue a really helpful video from a lady called Rayne Fiber Arts. Bingo! We have spinning! Now just need to practice drafting, consistency and twist. These things will come though!

Current WIPs Early July 2023
(or telling the world how crap I am at finishing projects!)

  • An orange corner to corner blanket made from single ply hand woven chunky Shetland wool. (This is proving to be a hard slog as there is a lot of twist in the yarn and it wants to do its own thing) – Started May 2023, TOO MUCH TWIST!
  • A muticoloured hexagon ball (the pieces are all complete with ends woven in, it just needs to be blocked sewn together and stuffed) – started March 2023 has stalled.
  • A dragon Easter egg cover. Pattern from knitting and crochet magazine. (Fell out of love with the pattern quickly. It will probably be frogged as I have a different plan for the yarn) – Started March 2023 – Stalled
  • A Ba-Bomb (from Mario) dice bag. Own Design. (The main bag is finished, but now the feet need to be created, ran out of steam on this one) – Started February 2023 – Stalled

Canceled WIPs Early July 2023

  • A dragon scale tail cover for our lab with happy tail. Own Design  –  was frogged end of June, didnt work.
